Core Value #7:
Time is the most precious thing
Once, in a startup meeting, I had the opportunity to think about how much an idea is worth. That is, what is the value that should be assigned to an idea in itself and to the person who had it when evaluating how the profit sharing of a business is going to be.
After many inquiries, opinions and back and forth, the conclusion was more or less the following…
An idea in itself can be as bright as one of the many stars you see in the sky (and many more you don’t get to see). But what is really valuable is the execution of that idea, the journey of that light, its crossing.
The journey of the light of a star that becomes visible in our sky, by the way, must be magnificent. Not only is it literally light years away, but also, only the visible light from about 5,000 stars (out of the 100 to 400 billion in our galaxy) reaches the earth (all the stars we see in the sky with the naked eye are within the Milky Way).
What I am getting at is that we can have good business ideas but we cannot disregard the journey, the trip and above all, the time. Ideas in themselves have no value, they only become valuable when they are carried out.
And the execution of an idea takes time (as well as money and luck) and this is precisely my point. We cannot fail to consider time when undertaking an idea because that time is our time and our time is limited.
Time is what gives meaning to life. It is this concept of knowing that there is an end that makes us give a direction, that we trace a path towards which we want to go, because we know that we have a final destination, marked by time.
Time is the most valuable thing we have. If you are wondering whether to undertake a business idea, do the math, make the numbers and think about all the material part. But do not forget to consider the time, both the time it will take you to carry it out and the time you will have to dedicate afterwards and if it is something you really want to dedicate your time to.
Many times we make decisions based on numbers and profitability but we don’t take into account our desire, our motivation, our passion. Discipline is important and is much easier to maintain when you enjoy what you do. And while money can be a great motivator, it’s how we use our time that gives us real satisfaction.
I, for example, try to connect only with conscious businesses or purposeful projects with which we share that good for the world is necessary and I choose to invest my time in these types of projects because it makes me feel good to empower them and this makes my time worthwhile so I am always motivated to start a new project and carry out ideas that add up.
In this sense, I highly recommend taking the time to know yourself, to explore and venture to find the things that motivate us, that touch our heartstrings and that give meaning to our life, to our time, because in the end, it is the only time we have. So we must decide how we want to spend our time and take control, be masters of our time.
And do not stay only in the world of ideas because, as I said, ideas are only worth when they travel and are carried out. So choose your path, choose your ideas and dedicate the time they need to reach their destination.
