Core Value #4:
It’s not done until it’s right
There are some games, especially some board games (like Monopoly or Clue), that once you start you can’t interrupt and, in case you don’t have time to play it all, it’s better not to play it and leave it for another time.
The same thing that happens with that kind of games, happens to me with projects. And the thing is that once I get into it, I like to do it fully, nailed, whole, and go all the way to the end. And if I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it well, not to get out of the way, or to rush a payment because that’s not my satisfaction (and certainly much less that of my client).
For many web developers, it is quite easy and common to leave things half done. I’ve seen it on many websites that come to me from clients who are dissatisfied with their previous developer. That is, developers who provide a half-baked solution but to the client’s eye it may not even be noticeable. The issue comes when the problems start to arrive or the desired results are not obtained. This can be in the loading speed, in some update, incompatibility, vulnerability, broken links, positioning problems, code cleanup, etc.
It is more or less the same as a mechanic who makes a repair to our vehicle and, although it seems that everything works fine, we do not know if the parts he used are of quality, if the workmanship is reliable or if at some point the vehicle will present problems again.
So, just as it is important to have a reliable mechanic, I think it is important to have a reliable web developer, who we know does things right. Who does not simply look for a plugin or a theme and install it on our website as if it were a patch, just to “get what we ask for” without thinking about the implications it will have on performance, security, database and what will happen if at some point it has to be uninstalled or changed. If it is clean or will leave garbage difficult to track, nor if it is really the best solution for what we want to do or for our business.
I believe that just as I expect my trusted mechanic to go a step further than what I ask him to do and to treat the root of the problems so that in the long run it will be cheaper and my car will run better, my customers expect the same from me.
That’s why, when I go into a project, I like to see it through to the end, until it’s right and it works from all angles. I like to advise my clients and not just “do what they ask me to do”, I like to understand what they want and analyze if it’s really what’s right for them.
And getting it right doesn’t mean starting from scratch. There are many advanced projects that can’t afford to start from scratch and doing it right means working with what you have (be it the plugin, the theme, the server or the website builder) and doing the best you can with it (which in many occasions can be a big challenge) but still going all the way to the end.
Therefore, I aim to have long-term clients, who value a job well done and who can trust that when they ask me for something, I will not do it just to comply or to get paid but because it is what is best for their business, because if they do well, I do well and for me, indirectly, the business of my clients, is my business too.
And this is why although I maintain products to solve specific needs, my service is web development with a holistic approach that is not limited only to web development but encompasses a general, comprehensive, global perspective of the online business of my clients, where everything that is done (or asked to do) is thought from all angles ensuring that it is what is most appropriate (or setting up a containment plan if there are doubts).
If all this resonates with you and you are about to start an online project or business or you already have one and would like to optimize it, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Keep in mind, though, that for me starting a project means going all the way and I won’t consider it finished until it’s right.
Let’s rock
